This jeweled golden scarab is worn by all of Lord Ankhtopot's guards. The scarabs are attached to the body in the center of the chest directly over the heart. Every guard wears a scarab and they are never removed. The legs of the scarab are actually imbedded in the guards flesh. There are two gems in the boby of the scarab, one red and the other blue. Each gem glows with a soft inner light. The wing of the scarab are covered in the Har'Akiren heiroglyphics. If Detect Magic is cast the item it radiates as Transmutation and Alteration.
LOCATION:
The first time that the party encounters this item in in the City of The Darkened Sun. They encountered a group of guards while in the city and both Ephemerous and Saurabh noticed that each guard was wearing a scarab on his chest. Their armor is even designed with a space so that the scarab can be viewed. Most likely a symbol of honor and status among the guards.
PROPERTIES:
The scarab has many function with the most important function being to ensure complete and total loyalty to the Dark Lord. There is no question about loyalty or allegence. While the guard wears the scarab they are bound by oath to obey his every order without question. Even orders of death and suicide. The most dangerous aspect about this level of control is that most of the time it is completely unnesssessary since the guards are totally and obsessively loyal to the Dark Lord. Very seldom does the Dark Lord have to activate the domination aspect of the scarab.
